Thermal cures in Chianciano Terme

In the heart of Tuscany, between the Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, the Terme di Chianciano have for over a century been a reference point for the
thermal health in Italy. From 3 April 2026 all thermal cures affiliated with the National Health Service, accessible with the
general practitioner's prescription and payment of co-payment only (unless exemptions apply).

Each cycle includes a initial thermal medical examination and a customised pathway according to the pathology and needs of the patient.

Thermal cures are indicated in particular for:

  • Arthrorheumatic pathologies
  • Respiratory ailments
  • Vascular disorders and venous insufficiency

Types of Thermal Cures at Terme di Chianciano

At Terme di Chianciano, thermal cures are based on four springs with specific properties and recognised therapeutic indications. Treatments are available in agreement with the National Health Service (SSN), unless otherwise indicated.

Each course of treatment is preceded by a medical-thermal examination and customised to the patient's pathology and clinical state.

Hydropinic cures (digestive and hepatic care)

Gentle intestinal purification to regain lightness and well-being.

Cure with Acqua Santa (under NHS agreement)

It stimulates the liver and digestion, promoting the body's natural purification.

Cure with Acqua Fucoli

Promotes digestive well-being and regularity.

Mud and Thermal Baths

Purifies and relieves joint pain.

Liver Mud Therapy (NHS approved)

It purifies and stimulates liver function.

Arthro-rheumatic mud therapy (NHS approved)

It relieves pain and improves joint mobility.

Inhalation treatments (NHS approved)

How to access thermal cures affiliated with the NHS

At Terme di Chianciano it is possible to undergo thermal cures in agreement with the National Health Service, by presenting a prescription from a general practitioner or contracted specialist.

Conventional cures represent an opportunity for prevention and natural treatment, accessible from all Italian regions.

The 4 steps to start the cure

1. Ask for a prescription

See your family doctor (or specialist
contracted) to obtain a commitment for
thermal cures.

The prescription must be indicated:

  • pathology
  • the type of spa treatment envisaged (e.g.
    mud therapy, inhalation treatments, hydropinics, etc.).

2. Book a course of treatment

Contact Terme di Chianciano to schedule the
initial thermal medical examination and plan the
treatment cycle.

3. Carry out the thermal medical examination

Before the start of treatment, a visit is scheduled
with the facility's spa doctor, who:

  • assesses clinical documentation
  • confirms suitability for treatment
  • customise the treatment protocol

4. The cycle of care begins

The agreed cycle generally includes:

  • 12 consecutive days of treatment
  • possible supplementation with mud or baths,
    according to prescription

It is recommended not to interrupt the cycle,
especially in the first few days.

Important information

Those accessing through the NHS participate by paying the health ticket, unless exempted.

Ticket: €55.00 (variable according to regional regulations)

It is possible to have one cycle of subsidised treatment per year.

They are exempt from paying co-payments, according to current regulations: 

  • Children under 6 years 
  • Over 65 with family income within the limits 
  • Minimum pensioners 
  • Unemployed with income within the limits 
  • Civilian, war or service invalids (second degree and category) 

For detailed information on updated thresholds, please check with your doctor or ASL. 

For mud and thermal baths it is necessary: 

  • personal bathrobe 
  • costume or undergarment 
  • flip-flops 

It is possible to rent a bathrobe and slippers at Terme Sillene. 

No specific clothing is required for hydropinic and inhalation treatments.

Treatments are supervised by qualified health personnel and coordinated by the spa doctor.

FAQ - Thermal Therapies at Terme di Chianciano

Yes. Terme di Chianciano provides thermal treatments in agreement with the NHS. It is sufficient to present a prescription from a family doctor or specialist who has an agreement with the NHS to access the treatments. 

Yes, a doctor's prescription is required to access contracted care. Without a prescription, however, it is possible to receive treatment privately. 

The co-pay fee is €55.00 (unless exemptions and different regional provisions apply). 
Those entitled to exemption do not pay co-payment. 

The agreed cycle generally includes 12 consecutive days of treatment. 
It is recommended not to interrupt the cycle, especially in the first few days. 

The treatments are indicated in particular for: 

  • digestive and hepatic disorders 
  • joint and rheumatic pain 
  • venous insufficiency and circulatory problems

Yes. Persons covered by the National Health Service are entitled to one course of contracted treatment per year. 

Hydropinic treatment consists of daily intake of thermal water (Acqua Santa and/or Acqua Fucoli) according to medical prescription. 
It is indicated for liver, digestion, intestinal motility and liver purification. 
Treatment with Acqua Santa is affiliated to the NHS. 
Acqua Fucoli can be integrated into the pathway but is not contracted. 

Yes. Aerosols and inhalations are covered by the NHS on prescription. 
Nasal showers can be performed as a supplementary treatment. 

Thermal mud is indicated for: 

  • arthrosis and joint pain 
  • fibromyalgia 
  • muscle rigidity 
  • chronic inflammations 
  • digestive disorders (liver sludge) 

They can be performed in agreement with the NHS. 

Inhalation cures are also suitable for paediatric patients with a doctor's prescription. 
For other therapies, a medical-thermal evaluation is required. 

Yes. Each treatment cycle includes an initial medical-thermal examination to define the most suitable and customised treatment. 

It is recommended to bring:
