Not just thermal waters: the 1000 benefits of fango-balneotherapy

In a world where stress and daily tensions are the order of the day, it is important to listen to your body and take time for your physical and mental well-being. Joint pain and digestive problems can be temporary annoyances or recurring conditions that can affect our quality of life.

Mud may be the answer. Mud therapy at Terme di Chianciano is that unhoped-for panacea. Combined with thermal water baths and massages, fango-balneotherapy can bring unparalleled benefits to body and mood for a feeling of total renewal.

The benefits of mud for joints and liver

Perhaps not everyone knows that thermal mud is a mature compound rich in minerals and substances beneficial to the human body. The Chianciano Mud Spas, in particular, are a mixture of local clay and thermal water. Clay and thermal water together release healing virtues through the enrichment of mineral and organic substances such as microorganisms, microfauna and humus. This combination creates a microbiota that, matured at the correct temperature, enables us to provide you with our best cures. Our mud baths are therapeutic, natural and sustainable products, packaged on a “zero kilometre” basis in our thermal centre.

Mud therapy has ancient origins. Romans and Etruscans appreciated its regenerating and soothing properties. Applied to the skin, thermal mud helps stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation, helping to eliminate accumulated toxins and improving tissue oxygenation. Moreover, thanks to its composition rich in minerals and trace elements, the mud nourishes the skin, making it more elastic, radiant and toned.

We at Terme di Chianciano are proud to continue such an ancient tradition. With the help of modern medicine, we are able to treat joint pain as well as cure the digestive system. Thanks to our services, which are affiliated with the National Health System, and the training of our operators, Terme di Chianciano is recognised as a thermal centre in the Prima Super category. An ideal course of treatment combines the virtues of our mud and Acqua Santa with the benefits of thermal baths and therapeutic massages.

Our fango-balneotherapy treatments can provide a valuable aid that, in combination with other conventional therapies, can achieve important results in the care of the health of body and mind.

Staying well is everyone's right and staying healthy is the best possible investment. Thanks to an agreement with the NHS, with a simple prescription from one's family doctor or specialist, every Italian citizen is entitled to an annual cycle of fango-balneotherapy spa treatments.

Treating joints: arthro-rheumatic mud baths

Our arthro-rheumatic mud is ideal for conditions such as arthrosis, chronic pain or algo-functional limitations. After identifying the areas to be treated with a medical examination, the mud is spread and covered with an occlusive bandage to maintain a temperature of 45 degrees. This heat activates vasodilation and the mud stimulates metabolism with an antioxidant mechanism. The neuroendocrine system also benefits, restoring the correct balance between cortisol and beta-endorphin production.

The 15-minute applications provide immediate relief for osteo-muscular pain and, in the long term, prevent inflammation that contributes to joint degeneration. Our arthro-rheumatic mud baths are indicated for the prevention of conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis as well as joint degeneration such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Our facilities also allow balneotherapy sessions that, in combination with arthro-rheumatic mud baths, can treat widespread musculoskeletal pain such as fibromyalgia. The minerals dissolved in our thermal waters, as well as the dry or moist heat of saunas and steam baths can help reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation.

Treating the liver: liver mud baths

In addition to joint diseases, Terme di Chianciano are renowned for treating the liver and digestive system. The liver mud helps reactivate liver cells and stimulate proper bile production. Applied to the patient's abdomen, the warm mud stimulates choleretic and cholagogue reactions in the gall bladder, which increase bile secretion to reactivate a correct digestive balance and purify the biliary tract. Applied for 15 minutes, the mud helps eliminate toxins and prevent the formation of gallstones and dyspepsia, the basis of poor digestion.

To enhance the effectiveness of the treatment, liver mud therapy is combined with hydropinic treatment. The ideal session starts in the morning, at the thermal spring, where Acqua Santa is drunk before the application of hepatic mud. The synergy between mud and Acqua Santa can help in treating conditions such as chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. Mud therapy sessions can make a valuable contribution to alleviating gallstones, by promoting dilation of the bile ducts, and gallbladder disease, by acting as an anti-inflammatory to the gallbladder.

Fango-balneotherapy: the synergy of water, mud and massage

Balneotherapy, or hydropinic therapy, exploits the beneficial properties of thermal water to promote relaxation, regeneration and general wellbeing of the body. Thermal baths, enriched with natural substances such as mineral salts, trace elements, and noble gases such as ozone, stimulate the circulatory system, relax muscles, relieve tension, and promote the drainage of toxins. Balneotherapy is particularly suitable for reducing stress, improving sleep quality, soothing muscle and joint pain, and promoting the healing of minor injuries and inflammations.

Mud therapy and balneotherapy together provide a powerful synergistic treatment capable of delivering greater benefits. Applying mud to the body, followed by a balneotherapy session, optimises the therapeutic effects of both treatments. The mud prepares the skin, opening the pores and removing impurities, and causing the body to absorb minerals.

The thermal bath at a temperature of 37 °C stimulates the microcirculation and enhances the anti-inflammatory function, as well as providing a regenerating and relaxing effect. This combination promotes detoxification, cell regeneration, improved circulation and a general feeling of well-being and vitality.

For maximum benefit, therapeutic massage should not be neglected, for a complete psychophysical rebalancing. Fango-balneotherapy and massage enhance each other. Massage multiplies the effects of fango-balneotherapy and encourages the release of endorphins already activated by the mud and bath. After the mud and bath sessions, the body is already warm and relaxed, and a massage, which concludes a one-and-a-half-hour treatment, can relax even the deepest muscle fibres, loosening contractures and restoring the right muscle-tendon relationships.
