Mud and Thermal Baths

Mud-based thermal cures represent one of the most effective and comprehensive treatments in the thermal tradition of the Chianciano Spa
Through the combined action of heat, thermal water and natural substances, they act in depth on the organism, with benefits at both digestive and muscle-articular levels.
At Terme di Chianciano, there are two main types: hepatic and arthro-rheumatic, each with specific therapeutic indications.

Fango Liver Hydrotherapy

This term refers to the combined treatment of hepatic mud bath, thermal bath and hydropinic treatment.
It is a complete course aimed at improving gastro-intestinal function and promoting a purifying action in the body.
Liver mud involves the application of a specific mud on the liver region (right abdominal area, anterior and posterior), wrapped in natural cloths that allow a gradual release of heat.
The therapeutic action is based on:

  • vasodilation and increased hepatic circulation
  • stimulation of liver cleansing functions
  • production and fluidification of bile (choleretic and cholagogue action)

The treatment is indicated in cases of:

  • dyspepsia (slow or difficult digestion)
  • biliary disorders and biliary tract dyskinesias
  • chronic gastroduodenitis
  • chronic cholecystitis alithiasis
  • irritable bowel syndrome

Mud bathing is combined with hydropinic treatment, based on the intake of thermal water with action:

  • soothing on the digestive mucosa
  • prokinetics on gastric and intestinal motility

Cycle under SSN agreement:
12-day hydropinic cure + 6 hepatic mud baths + 6 thermal baths.

Balneo Mud - arthro-rheumatic therapy

Arthro-rheumatic mud therapy consists of applying thermal mud directly to the joints.

It is indicated for:

  • rheumatoarthropathies
  • trauma outcomes
  • osteoporosis
  • fibromyalgia

Therapy objectives:

  • reduction of pain
  • improved joint function
  • slowing of damage progression

The mud, applied at about 45°C, acts through:

  • thermal effect (myorelaxation)
  • increased blood circulation
  • elimination of pro-inflammatory metabolites
  • stimulation of endorphin production

Scientific studies also point to a serotonergic action, with not only local but also general benefits:

  • reduced sensitivity to pain
  • relaxing effect on the neurovegetative system

The treatment includes:

  • application of mud (approx. 5 cm thick) for 15-20 minutes
  • cleansing shower
  • final thermal bath

Sludge can be:

  • total
  • localised, on indication of the spa doctor

Recommended cycle: 12 consecutive sessions, repeatable every 4-6 months
Available under SSN agreement
